That would probably work if you were not needing to add a ton of light. The light fixture is very pretty, about the size of a basketball. We added it to a stairwell and it light it up fine.

It does require hardwire installation, but I'm not sure if it could be converted. It comes with the standard black, white, green wires.
How do you attach the crystal prism that is pictured?
It is all one piece. To change the lght bulb, you can move the metal circles to change and then move them back. They are easy to move, but will stay in place once you stop.
