If you use a transparent bulb, the opening at the top of the shade will let out a significant amount of light (too much, IMO). I'm using a flood light bulb with an opaque neck (typically used in can lights) that works well. Using a down rod to enclose the power cord is essential for this type of pendant. If you buy a light without a down rod—i.e., if the fixture hangs by the power cord itself—you likely won't be able to straighten out the cord satisfactorily, and it will look a bit sloppy. That said, the down rod provided with this light was thicker than other pendants I've bought, and it looked out of place hanging in the vicinity of another pendant I have in the same room. I therefore bought a replacement set of down rods with M10 threads and an outside diameter of 0.47", which is a little more than 1/8" thinner than the rods provided with this light (was able to find them on Amazon warehouse for ~$16). The attached photo shows the pendant installed with the replacement down rods, and the close-up shows the difference in thicknesses between the rods (I kept the swivel adapter near the ceiling provided with this pendant).

I haven't been able to get someone to hang this for me yet, but I love the style. I was looking for a lighting fixture that would be appropriate for a farm style kitchen but would still not appear out of place when veiwed through a pass-thru from a traditional livingroom. This is just perfet. It fits in with both rooms, is attractive, and seems to be very well made. I am pleased with my choice.
